Yet quite remarkably, Old Havana remains a beautiful place to visit. Some parts of Old Havana or the neighborhoods just outside the actual old town are filthy and a literal definition of a third-world slum.
Unlike the old towns in many other cities, real people actually live and work in Old Havana despite the fact that many of the buildings are dilapidated after decades of neglect. The hotel all inclusive bands give them the info they need to approach you be warned. They demanded £80 for our drink each (2) I said no way - my husband was not allowed out the bar until he paid £40 - this amount was what he managed to ge them down to eventually!!!! Be warned it’s not this friendly city that people say and the tour guides hadn’t mentioned that this con goes on. The amount was ridiculous and the female kept saying I have babies to feed and no money.
The result was we ended up in a back street small bar being served drinks that I didn’t drink and they demanded money for these drinks. On hindsight we should’ve known better as we are two switched on adults however, we got taken away in the moment. They asked if they could take us to one of the best bars in the area for a cocktail that was true Cuban. They asked how long if our tour we had left we said 35 minutes and then the coach will take us the two hour journey back to our hotel. You are staying in (named the hotel) and said you probably don’t recognise me out of uniform! The female then started chatting to me asking where are you from then saying oh I have a friend who lives in my scoundrel etc etc they both were extremely friends and spoke good English. The male came up and said hi how are you both doing it’s me the waiter from the hotel.
During the free time we (husband & I) were approached by a couple around age 30 years whilst walking down a busy shopping street in old town centre. Went to Havana on a guided tour then got two hours free time.
